An artificial reef is the use of underwater structures that try to take a flat-bottomed (boring) area of ocean and provide some protection for fish. It started because scientists noticed large fish populations around sunken wrecks. So people started dumping all sorts of things – subway cars, tanks, old trucks, concrete sculptures, etc. to attract fish.
