And artillery shell is a lot like a cannon ball. It is a big hunk of metal (sometimes with explosives inside, sometimes not) shot out of a huge gun. The difference is that an artillery shell has a more aerodynamic shape. Typically an artillery shell has a maximum range of 20 km (13 miles).
